The Challenge & Objective

WildMag needed a fresh, playful visual language to stand out in the crowded outdoor magazine space. The goal was to create a series of characters that give the magazine a distinctive, lively personality – playful yet professional – and integrate seamlessly with photography and editorial content across both print and digital formats.

The Audience

The magazine targets adventurous, design-conscious readers who enjoy outdoor culture but also value creativity and originality. They respond to bold, playful visuals that feel dynamic and engaging.

Exploration

Early experiments with the illustrations showed that the visuals alone weren’t enough. I developed a custom typeface to make the system more unique, emphasize motion, and add playful energy.

The Outcome

The final concept combines clean vector illustrations with photography, creating playful interactions between characters and real-world environments. The custom typeface, crafted as a full alphabet, introduces motion and funky energy across headlines while the bold pink/red palette gives the magazine a fresh, eye-catching look. The result is a cohesive, dynamic editorial system that feels lively, distinctive, and engaging across print and digital.

Why character design?

Character design plays a powerful role in shaping contemporary visual identities, especially in a cultural moment defined by uncertainty and digital complexity. By introducing a mascot, brands tap into emotional needs – creating a sense of warmth, familiarity, and trust through what could be described as “pet-coded” design. These characters act as approachable entry points, softening abstract or technical concepts and making them more relatable. At the same time, small, distinctive figures become portable identity markers, allowing audiences to connect with and even “carry” the brand as part of their own expression. Today’s mascots are no longer static symbols but dynamic, digital-first assets that scale across platforms: they guide users, support storytelling, and bring cohesion to brand experiences. In an era shaped by gamification and character-driven interfaces, they naturally embody motivation, feedback, and progression. More importantly, they add presence—something beyond what logos, systems, or tone of voice can achieve alone. When strategically defined, a character becomes a consistent ambassador that builds narrative depth, humanizes communication, and creates memorable, emotionally engaging touchpoints across both digital and physical spaces.
